19th c. Miniature French Empire Commode
A fine early 19th century French Empire miniature sample commode crafted of solid walnut and burl of walnut veneer with deep, striking grain patterns. The secondary structure uses a mix of solid oak and pine. Four dovetailed drawers (three lower exposed drawers and a concealed top belt drawer) frames by elegant columns and resting on a classic bun feet. Working locks with one key. French polish finish. Excellent quality. Often called an apprentice or "sample" piece (maîtrise), these high-quality miniatures were built by 19th century craftsmen to demonstrate mastery over complex veneer techniques or to showcase furniture designs to wealthy clients before committing to full-sized builds. Perfect for storing treasured objects or for use as a jewelry box or men's valet. Circa 1800-1820
