An early 19th century French Empire mahogany adjustable height tabletop desk, made for writing or reading in bed. Beautifully crafted desktop has a green leather writing surface, with brass adjustable easel and is flanked by hinged compartments. Dovetailed drawer with working lock and key opens to reveal hinged doors and compartments for pens and paper. Sturdy turned column post with steel bracket and brass button that when pushed, allows the desk to be raised or lowered. Violin shaped plinth base with book-matched mahogany veneer and brass castors. Wheels roll smoothly, so desk can slide over the edge of a bed. When fully raised, may be used as a standing desk or lectern. All original. Minor veneer loss. Circa 1810-1830.
