18th Century French Cast Iron Fireback Bas Relief

18th Century French Cast Iron Fireback Bas Relief
An 18th century French cast iron fireback featuring a highly detailed biblical narrative bas relief. The central scene depicts the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders from the book of Daniel. Susana is shown at her bath while being observed and confronted by two elderly judges. The casting features characteristic late Baroque to early Louis XV design detailing along the upper border. The casting features a shaped, scrolling arched crest at the top centered around a hand-carved grotesque mask motif. Historically placed against the back wall of a fireplace to absorb heat from the fire and radiate it back into a room while protecting the structural brickwork. Notice the crack from the bottom left of center. Circa 1770-1890.
